Valentine’s Day is the single day of the year when romantic love is top of mind. Not just love, though. The day’s agenda and the gifts that come with are also top of mind. Let’s face it — it’s the gift-giving part of Valentine’s Day that can be quite the pressure-cooker! There’s a pretty easy solve, though. Here's the key: no matter what language of love you are dealing with, jewelry is almost always a hit on Valentine’s Day. That’s because the value is not just in the amount spent or the size of the jewelry given. It’s in the purpose behind the gift, which is to celebrate your love. It sounds trite and old-fashioned to say this, but the jewelry you give carries the intentions of your heart. Whether it’s a small token of endearment or a splashy statement of big love, we have a multitude of options. So let’s get started, shall we?
Diamonds have always been known as an emblem of love and commitment. Greek legend has it that Cupid, the god of desire, affection and romantic love, used diamond tipped arrows to draw lovers to each other. Moreover, the Greeks believed that the blazing light emitted by diamonds symbolized the ever-burning flame of love. Even the name “diamond” came from the Greek word “adámas”, which means unbreakable and untamed — much like the nature of passionate romantic love. While we are more gold-centric, we have a plethora of diamond pieces that are sure to appeal.

If you are wondering how the heart came to be associated with feelings of love, the answer lies with the ancient Greeks. Due to noticeable physical sensations of a “racing heart” while experiencing strong emotions, prominent ancient Greek philosophers and poets, including Plato, Aristotle and Sappho posited the notion that the heart was the center of emotions, including love. The origin of the heart symbol that we use today came later — around the time of Romans, and was in heavy use by the Medieval period. It is based on the shape of the leaves of a now extinct plant called silphium, which the Romans used to make love potions. These days, the heart symbol is everywhere, from emojis to jewelry. Our Talisman collection is where our solid gold and silver hearts reside. Here are a few that we think would make a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift!

The history of love letters goes back a while. In fact, the earliest reference to love letters appeared in Indian mythology around 5,000 years ago. Ancient Roman literature is filled with them — think of Ovid’s “Ars Amatoria” (Art of Love), which discussed extensively the art of writing love letters and using them to create romantic intrigue. During the medieval period, the “Ars Dictaminis” was another tome that expanded upon the guidelines for writing the perfect love letter. Renaissance era love letters contained elaborate penmanship and fostered the idea of courtly love. By the Victorian age, love letters were critical to establishing connection as they allowed lovers to write things they couldn’t always say out loud. During the 20th century, love letters played an important role in allowing soldiers and their lovers to stay connected during challenging times. These days, love letters are more like love texts generated by AI. But hey — letters can still convey a whole lot of romance. Especially in the form of jewelry. Our Alphabet City and Scrivere collections contain pieces that get very personal. Consider these golden beauties as you search for the perfect gift.
