If you are wondering how the heart came to be associated with feelings of love, the answer lies with the ancient Greeks. Due to noticeable physical sensations of a “racing heart” while experiencing strong emotions, prominent ancient Greek philosophers and poets, including Plato, Aristotle and Sappho posited the notion that the heart was the center of emotions, including love. The origin of the heart symbol that we use today came later — around the time of Romans, and was in heavy use by the Medieval period. It is based on the shape of the leaves of a now extinct plant called silphium, which the Romans used to make love potions. These days, the heart symbol is everywhere, from emojis to jewelry.
