#BTS Memo, Edition No. 1

Hi everyone. This is Gina, co-founder of, and designer for, Auvere. In this inaugural #BTS Memo, Edition No. 1, I'd like to give you some "behind-the-scenes" details about our design and creative process — more particularly, the inspirations behind collections and individual pieces. My design process is rarely linear. Sometimes, I get lucky and a design sails into my mind’s eye almost perfectly formed and all I have to do is find paper and pencil. At other times, I need something to spark my imagination. On those days, I look for inspiration in various places, including previous designs that I've created, new information or discoveries about which I've read in the news, images that move me, as well as over-arching themes such as nature or space. Today, I want to talk about the inspiration behind our Astrella Collection and some of the jewelry in our Talisman Collection — outer space.

My fascination with outer space arose from a few things: (1) our own solar system, including Earth's own faithful moon, which glows gold or silver depending on its location; (2) the discovery in 2017, the same year in which Auvere came into being, of the existence of seven earth-sized exoplanets that orbit a dwarf star called Trappist-1 located 40 light years from Earth; (3) galaxies of stars that blanket midnight blue skies and the constellations located therein; and (4) the provenance of precious metals, including gold, which results from exploding supernovae in outer space.

As long as humans have been on Earth, we’ve been fascinated by the moon. Not only does the moon affect life on Earth, it has challenged and fed human imagination for eons. And it feeds mine too. If you appreciate Auvere’s jewelry, then you know that our design aesthetic is largely minimalistic. While I love unusual shapes as much as I do simple ones, I tend to eschew elements that tend to be more decorative. Not all the time. But more often than not. This is why the spherical shape of the moon (and real-life stars for that matter), appeals to me. See below for our moon inspired jewelry.

In February of 2017, we learned of the discovery of seven new exoplanets orbiting a cool dwarf star known as Trappist-1. At the time of this discovery, Auvere existed as a concept. It didn’t come to life until October of 2017. Trappist-1 and its orbiting planets lie about 40 light-years, or 235 trillion miles, from Earth. Interestingly, from an astronomer’s point of view, 235 trillion miles is not terribly far away! Astronomers determined that the planets are oriented in a way that allows them to be studied in detail using high powered telescopes. They have posited that one or more of these exoplanets could be at just the right temperature to allow for the existence of oceans, which could mean the possibility of life. At the time this discovery was made, I was on my way to quitting my career as a lawyer. The timing was right. I was leaving one world for another that felt like light years away. I envisioned immediately a series of pieces inspired by these planets crafted from gold, a precious metal that originated from exploding stars.

Who doesn’t enjoy staring up at galaxies of stars blanketing a navy black sky and locating the constellations that are formed within. Some of the wonders of outer space are very real and known; however, much remains quite conceptual and unknown. As a result, galaxies of stars offer a fertile source of inspiration and creative license. For example, real stars are spherical. They don’t have spikes or sharp edges. Yet, the most common design of stars includes spikes that are meant to evoke a cheerful twinkle of light.

The explosion of a star is called a supernova. A supernova occurs during the last stage of the life of a star, which results in the creation of heavy metals, including gold. Essentially, the explosion results in temperatures that reach millions of degrees, which fosters the formation of gold atoms. Those atoms are cast into space and ultimately become part of the galactic matter that forms new stars and planetary bodies, including asteroids. The gold reserves on Earth originated from gold matter being absorbed into asteroids, millions of which crashed into Earth when our planet was in its early stages of formation. From a design point of view, this galactic provenance makes gold a very special source of inspiration and creativity. Our use of high karat gold is our acknowledgement of the rarity and wondrous source of gold. But some pieces are directly inspired by the idea of supernova, including our Star Power Ring.
