JEWELRY AS ART

The Earring Edition

If the term ‘art’ refers to the creative means through which human beings express themselves, or showcase their skills, or give life to ideas in the form of beautiful objects, then jewelry is one of the first and most prolific manifestations of art. From the simple to the extravagant, each item of jewelry is a wearable sculpture that has the power to tell multiple stories — certainly those of its designer and maker, but more importantly, the stories of its wearer. Scroll down to read some of the stories and inspirations behind a few of our artful earrings.

In designing our 22 karat gold and diamond Conic Mobile Diamond Earrings, we thought about the work of artist, Alexander Calder. A jewelry designer in his own right, Calder is best known for hanging mobiles as well as monumental curvilinear sculptures such as the Red Flamingo installed during the early 1970s in front of the Federal Plaza in Chicago. While Calder favored asymmetry, we lean towards balance, especially when designing mobile earrings such as these. What we love most about these earrings is the way they sparkle as they move.

Both Calder mobiles and the mechanics of flight inspired our 22 karat gold Wingspan collection, which includes three pairs of chandelier earrings, two pairs of stud earrings and two bracelets. The shape of each ‘wing’ is based on the wings of jets and falcons alike, while the movement of these earrings derives from the gentle back and forth motions of Calder’s mobiles.

Part of the Astrella collection, our 18 karat gold Carina Earrings are loosely inspired by the Carina constellation in the Southern hemisphere. These earrings are formed by four curved arcs, each containing a golden ball that is evocative of celestial bodies blazing against the night sky. These arcs are attached to each other to create the appearance of stars floating on their own trajectory.

Our 22 karat gold and diamond Stalactite Diamond Earrings are definitely artful. One of many pieces in our Naturaliste collection, these earrings are inspired by the elongated shapes of icy stalactite formations. Sculpted from rich 22 karat gold and polished to a high gleam, our stalactites have their own icy vibe in the form of a cool cluster of pave set round cut diamonds that fall gracefully from the lobe. These super stunners will do nothing less than elevate your ear game. And your art collection too.

Very few things bring as much joy to as many people as ice cream. Especially when enveloped in a scrumptious golden cone. That’s how we feel about our 22 karat gold and diamond Ice Cream Cone Diamond Earrings Large. Wearing these miniature sculptures brings nothing but joy. A mouthwatering mix of sparkling diamonds and rich 22 karat gold makes these earrings delectable and almost impossible to resist. Part of our art-driven Sculptura collection, our Ice Cream Cone Diamond Earrings comes in two sizes: Large and Small.

Our Arthropod Earrings result from an idea inspired by nature but rendered in geometrical form. One of the most unique and iconic designs in our collection of earrings and ear cuffs, our Arthropod Earrings, which come in 22 karat polished gold, 22 karat satin finished gold and sterling silver, are loosely inspired by some of the coolest creatures in the vast Arthropoda phylum. Even if you are scared of spiders, the unusual shape and geometric flair of these earrings will intrigue you.

Inspired by a combination of architecture and geometry, our 18 karat gold Double Cone Earrings Tall are geometric bicones that are sliced open to reveal a solid inner core that binds both cones together. Boasting a design that is largely based on the spires that dot the New York City skyline, these statement earrings may be counted on to add a dose of sophisticated flair to your jewelry collection. If you prefer something shorter and more full-bodied, consider our 18 karat gold Double Cone Earrings Short. Both earrings are part of our expansive Arignote Collection.
