The Gilded Ones
Meet Julie Dee — our latest inductee into The Gilded Ones. We have to admit that Julie’s freshfaced, effortless style is the perfect foil to Auvere jewelry, but that’s not the only reason why we are smitten. We featured Julie because she’s a perfect example of a busy working mom who juggles a million things at once in a frenetic city (NYC!) — always with a jaunty flair. We can’t get enough of her because she never loses her sense of humor and makes us laugh uncontrollably at times! And of course, we admire her killer work ethic, “make it work” mentality and passion for her family. The truth be told, we secretly love that she hoards white tee-shirts and can turn the most classic looks into serious style goals with as much charm and ease as icons Hepburn (both of them) and Bacall.
So, Let’s chat!
Home Sweet Home. I grew up in Roslyn, New York but now I live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
The J.O.B.: Until a few years ago, I was an attorney in the New York City office of a big law firm. I worked in the corporate department for the first couple of years, which meant I rotated through a few practice groups before settling in the Real Estate department. These days, I work in the Legal Personnel department of another major New York City firm.
What is the craziest thing that you have ever done that you do not mind admitting in public: Hello! I am a lawyer! I know better than put those things in writing. Much less on the internet!
Your closest friends would tell us that you... They would likely tell you that I speak my mind. They might also say that I adore my family, value my friendships, and love being a working mom.
Something that people don’t know about you? Most of my friends think I am outgoing. Actually, I am relatively shy. I think that my innate shyness is reflected in my style, which is a bit under the radar.
What do you daydream about? I hardly have any time to daydream these days — being a new mom is no joke. If I had a spare minute, I would daydream about what kind of person my daughter Nellie will grow up to be or sleeping past 7 AM.
Astrology — Yes or No. Maybe. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t intrigued! I am a Scorpio, and when people find out, they don’t seem surprised.
THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
The 3 Cs. Clean. Classic. Comfortable.
STYLE ICONS — WHOSE STYLE DO YOU ADMIRE THE MOST AND WHY?
I don’t really have a style icon. I am way more into street style. I’ve been known to take creepy stealthy snapshots of cool things that people are wearing on the subway or on the street and then, once home, scouring the internet until I find it for myself.
CURRENT STYLE OBSESSIONS?
I have a current (permanent?) addiction to white tees. Recently, I hired an organizer to help me clean out my closet. She was in disbelief when she saw how many white tees I pulled out of one of my drawers. She counted 38 white tshirts! I am getting a second opinion, but I suspect that 38 white tees might be too many.
WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO WARDROBE PIECES?
Like I said — 38 white tees. I cannot live without them (although the organizer made sure that I am now living with a few less). White tees are an effortless and easy addition to (almost) any look. Oh, and black anything. Black pants, jackets, dresses, skirts — you name it. If it’s black and minimalist in design, it will be in my closet. I go to a LOT of weddings, and my go to pieces are anything long, lean, and architectural. No poufs. No frills.
WHAT FASHION RISKS HAVE YOU TAKEN IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS?
At this point, I know what I like and I know what looks good on me, so I rarely find myself taking fashion risks. The only one that comes to mind was actually my wedding dress. A wedding day is one day that most people choose to play it safe. I am not a girly girl, so for me to wear a gown with a gigantic skirt and a long train was definitely a risk. All of my close friends were convinced I would choose a simple silk slip dress.
WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR PERSONAL STYLE — COMFORT OR HIGH FASHION?
I enjoy looking at photos of high fashion but when it comes to my wardrobe, I focus more on comfort. Let’s be clear though — always chic and elegant comfort. Recently, I made a new rule for being a wedding guest: I will not wear heels that force me to sit. I want to dance all night with my husband and friends, so my fashion choices should not limit that. I’m all about the block heel right now.
HOW DOES JEWELRY FIT INTO YOUR DAILY WARDROBE?
I spend most days in a corporate office so I tend to dress conservatively — think black dresses or pencil skirts with classic black or white shirts. I rely heavily on jewelry to bump up the glam factor. I love dramatic statement necklaces and earrings, as they add some personality to my look. On weekends, I keep things comfortable and classic with smaller, more delicate pieces. On the other hand, that dramatic necklace I wear to the office works well to elevate my weekend uniform of black leather jacket, jeans and white tee.
YOU HAVE A BABY GIRL, NELLIE. HOW HAS SHE CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
Having my daughter has taught me to see the beauty in simple things. When she was born, we were typical crazy first-time parents and bought her as many toys as we could squeeze into our small Manhattan apartment. As the months went by, we realized that Nellie was more interested in random household objects that we hardly even noticed. That little chick will sit and study the texture of a throw pillow that we haven’t looked at in years. Meanwhile, we are tripping over the toys.
SO YOU WENT TO ISRAEL RECENTLY. TELL US ABOUT THE TRIP!
I went to Israel with my husband and his family to attend the wedding of a close friend. Before the wedding, we took a weekend trip to the Beresheet Hotel, a beautiful hotel on the rim of the Ramon Crater in the Negev desert. We then returned to Tel Aviv for the wedding. There is nothing like an Israeli wedding- they are filled with warmth, music, fresh air, and twinkle lights. I’ve been to Israel 3 times but it never gets old. I cannot wait to go back.
WHERE ARE YOU TRAVELING TO NEXT?
I am going to St. Barths with my family in December. I can’t tell you how excited I am to take Nellie in the ocean. The last time we took her swimming, she thought it was a giant bathtub and immediately fell asleep after. I’m hoping for better luck this time
WHAT ARE THE TOP 5 ITEMS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
I would love to spend a year traveling all over the world — preferably when my daughter is older so that she can really enjoy it too. I want her to be well traveled and informed.
This may make me sound like an “old lady”, but I really want to learn how to play bridge! You would be surprised at how many people my age have taken up the game. Bridge is a sophisticated and nuanced game with a high learning curve!
I want to skydive — once some courage to do so.
I hope to run a full marathon (I’ve done three half marathons so far).
I’ve always wanted to be a TV game show contestant. I made it pretty far in the casting process for one last year, but sadly was not picked.
LET’S TALK FAVORITES. FAVORITE MOVIE, MUSIC AND ART — WHAT ARE THEY?
Movie: The Graduate. In fact, I just bought an original poster from the Japanese release of the film in 1968. I can’t read Japanese, but I am excited to frame it and hang it in our apartment.
Music: Paul Simon. Hands down all time favorite. My favorite album is Graceland.
Artist: The photographer Slim Aarons. I have two of his prints on my walls and I am hoping to collect more. My favorite photographs of his are the ones he took in Lake Tahoe.
WHERE WOULD YOU TELL OUT-OF-TOWNERS TO GO IN ORDER TO GET YOUR NEW YORK CITY EXPERIENCE?
I’ve lived in a few neighborhoods in Manhattan, including the Financial District and the West Village. I currently live on the Upper East Side — in close proximity to Central Park. Before I moved up here, I visited the park only a few times a year to run various races with New York Road Runners. While I was on maternity leave, I rediscovered Central Park, while taking walks that would last all day. The park is enormous with many distinct areas, each with its own specific vibe — I think all out-of-towners (and even New Yorkers who rarely make it uptown) should wander past the perimeter and get lost in parts where you can forget that you are in the middle of New York City.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT GOLD?
I love that gold is beautiful, classic, and looks amazing on everyone. It’s versatile and exudes warmth.
WHAT AUVERE PIECES CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?
I love them all! It’s hard to pick a favorite. I have a lot of fun stacking the bracelets, especially the Astra Cuffs, the Astra bangles, and the Perigree bracelet. I have never been a ring girl, but I really love Auvere’s rings — the Slice Ring in particular. It is so simple and architectural. As far as necklaces go, I am in love with the new Pavo necklaces in the polished and satin finishes. They look both delicate and dramatic when piled on top of each other.
Talking to you made me realize that I really must make more time for daydreaming! And I have the perfect subject in mind — those Pavo necklaces!
